Hummingbird and Sage

This female Anna’s hummingbird was visiting a pineapple sage bush that grew in my back yard when I lived near Santa Cruz, CA. The picture was taken using an automated light beam trigger; I prefocused on the flowers with my camera on a tripod and set up two high speed studio flashes for the lighting, whenever a hummingbird would fly to that exact spot it would break the beam and get its picture taken. The background looks dark because the shutter speed was fast enough that most of the light reaching the sensor was from the flashes and not from daylight.
