I took this picture one chilly dark winter night a few miles north of Elk, CA, when the Milky Way was slowly setting in the west. To compensate for the limits of my camera sensor, I used a 15 second exposure for the sky and a 10 minute exposure for the foreground, and later I blended them back together to get a single well exposed image. Big waves breaking against the rocks and a low fog over the water farther out give the soft look to the ocean.
